[Review] Monolake: Atlas

R-1798512-1244564518.jpeg2009, Imbalance Computer Music.  Monolake rise from the mire with an evil vengence on their latest EP, Atlas.  The title track is all howling winds, eerie drones, and ominous synth washes over an insistent dubstep beat.  The track has a very cinematic (horror film) vibe which for me, conjurs up the image of running through a black forest being chased by some unseen evil that you can’t really escape because it’s swirling around you, enveloping you, no matter how fast you run.  Best to just succumb to the evil then and have a good dance with it.

Titan follows the same formula, dialing down the horror just a bit and mostly opting for a four-on-the-floor beat.  Not your conventional club tracks, these- I can imagine that hearing either of these them in a club after having injested the wrong substance could make for a seriously scary ride.  Once again though, proving that they are masters of creating other worlds in which to lose yourself with their excellent sound design, Monolake have given us quite a compelling listen in Atlas. Listen with the lights on.  -RM
